Addled Little Bird Brains

Something strange has been happening for the past couple days at our house. Starting Friday morning, a robin has been repeatedly flying into one particular window in the family room. Over breakfast on Friday, the kids counted it crashing into the window upwards of 30 times before they left for school. Friday evening, when I babysat, the robin was at it again, though maybe with decreased frequency. It stopped around sundown. I was just upstairs for about half an hour just now, and, sure enough, the robin flew into the window a few more times. This bizarre behavior doesn't seem to be hurting the bird, since it flies away just fine afterward. It doesn't appear to even be stunned, since it doesn't fall to the ground or anything. In fact, sometimes it will fly into the glass then perch on the windowsill for a few moments, occasionally pecking on the window. The window is now smeared with some kind of gunk in the area where the visitor typically plunks into the window, and the area of the patio outside the window is practically covered in bird crap. We cannot figure out why the bird is doing this. There is nothing on the wall opposite the window, which happens to be brown - no mirrors or pictures or anything that might attract the birds attention. And it seems to have no interest whatsoever in the identical window on the other side of the fireplace. So strange. I feel bad for the thing, repeatedly banging itself into the window. Maybe if it's still around tomorrow, I will try hanging a towel or something over the window to deter it.
